Curriculum, Credits and Grading
The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12), the IB Middle Years Programme (Grades 6-10), and the IB Primary Years Programme (Early Years-Grade 5). All students work towards the acquisition of an ISPP Diploma, however students may also choose to take the IB Diploma or IB certificate option. All grade 11 students are given the opportunity to enter the Diploma Programme; there is no prerequisite selection process. ISPP courses and IB Diploma courses are taught concurrently. The curriculum is IB based and draws from a variety of English-language programs consistent with the needs of an international student body.
Credit is awarded by semester. One full credit is earned by completing two semesters of a course that meets 200 minutes per week. The school year consists of 180 teacher-student contact days from mid-August through early June. Number grades are given for most courses. The Extended Essay, which is a requirement of the IB Diploma Programme is given 0.25 credits. Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) is a requirement for graduation and has the potential of 0.5 credits per year.
Graduation Requirements Class of 2011-2012
Minimum graduation requirements consist of 25.5 units of high school credit over eight semesters of study in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. The minimum credit requirements for an ISPP diploma are as follows: English (3), Humanities (3), Mathematics (3), Science (3), Non-English Language (3), Theory of Knowledge (1), Creativity, Action, Service (1), completion of the Extended Essay (for IB Diploma) or the Research Project (for ISPP Diploma) and Electives (8.5). A grade of 3 is required to receive credit for a course. Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are not used at ISPP.
