The Mother Tongue Programme on the Secondary Campus
Middle Years Programme (Grades 6-10)
If students are entering into Diploma and the Language self-taught option (see the Diploma section), it is important they maintain their Mother Tongue language acquisition. There are three possible ways of doing this:
OPTION 1 – scheduled during a normal timetabled day
The student takes Mother Tongue lessons during the Language B (Foreign Language) timetabled slot instead of a foreign language. This would involve the parents finding a teacher/tutor who is available at the same time slot as the Language B lesson. The school will help to find someone if feasible. The school only provides Language B French, Khmer, Mandarin, Spanish or English within the current tuition and fee structure so parents need to negotiate and pay the cost with the teacher/tutor separately. The school would provide a room for the lessons to take place and some in-service training for that person in the MYP programme and methodologies. This would count as a normal part of the school day and would earn credit towards their transcript. A school report will be issued.
OPTION 2 – after school
The student studies Mother Tongue after school with a recognized teacher/tutor of the school’s choosing. The number of lessons would be negotiated between the parent, tutor and school. The school would provide rooms and resources where applicable. Again it would be the responsibility of the parent to pay for the teacher. This teacher/tutor would need to be aware of the MYP programme and methodologies. This option is recognized by the MYP and can be recorded on the final MYP certification. A school report will be issued. It does not count as credit as the student will still be doing another Foreign Language in school.
OPTION 3 – tutoring at home
The parents tutor their child at home, but inform the school of the tutor’s name. The tutor would be invited to the school to provide an overview of the MYP programme and methodologies and any other support we are able to offer them. This would not have a report and could not count as credit. However, it will be recognized by the MYP and can be recorded on the final MYP certification.

Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12)
In the Diploma (Grades 11 & 12) students may opt to study their mother tongue as a self taught A1 candidate, this is a standard level course. This possibility is available to IB and ISPP Diploma students. A1 is literature based; the literature studied is chosen with the help of an A1 English specialist from the IB’s Prescribed Book Lists and World Literature lists. Students who study A1 self taught are responsible for finding a language tutor who can give them language support in their mother tongue. ISPP will offer assistance in finding such a tutor but does not pay the tutor or appoint the tutor. The Diploma Coordinator will need to know the tutor’s name and contact details for liaison purposes. The Diploma Coordinator will also ask parents to sign a letter vouching for their son or daughter’s fluency in the mother tongue. One third of the student’s scheduled A1 self taught time will be spent with the A1 English specialist since knowledge of the IB course is important for success. Here students will write their internal assessments and practice for exams.
Students who study A1 self taught will be ask to choose an English subject in Group 2 (English B or A2) to ensure they are still studying English. Students who take English A2 in addition to their own language A1 then they will be eligible for a Bilingual Diploma.
