Service at ISPP

Secondary School Projects 2019-20

Through service initiatives, International School of Phnom Penh aims to develop caring, principled and responsible global citizens. Service projects at ISPP build relationships between the school community and local communities in need. By engaging in active service our students are empowered to become informed, purposeful and active citizens who effect meaningful change.

ISF Sports

Goals
•  Promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle through playing sports.
•  Teaching and learning new skills.

Every Friday afternoon during Global Citizenship.

This activity promotes being fit and healthy through sports. ISPP students teach ISF students a variety of skills from ball games to team sports from all over the world. This is a good for sports enthusiasts.

Grades 6, 7, 9 & 10

ISF English

Goals
• Promote English language skills and a love of language.
• To interact positively with those. who are in need and are not always afforded the opportunity of a high level of education.

ISF Teaching English encourages ISPP students to help pass on their knowledge in order to teach the younger generation of Cambodians the  English language. Students will become more independent and are asked to take on the role of a teacher in order to help those who want to learn English.

ISF Math

Goals
• Promote numeracy skills and a love of Math.
• To interact positively with those. who are in need and are not always afforded the opportunity of a high level of education.

This activity aims to build fundamental knowledge of one of the most important subjects of your life. ISF students will learn Math through a variety of methods, including entertaining and engaging Math games. This activity enables IB students to develop responsible leadership skills.

ISF Swimming

Goals
• Pass on a the vital skills of swimming for survival.
• Teach water skills and promote swimming skills for those who don’t get the opportunity to swim.

In a country where deaths from drowning are a regular occurrence, it is vital that children develop water confidence and swimming skills at a young age.To join this activity participants must have reasonable swimming skills, and a keen interest in encouraging children to develop their swimming skills.

TEDX Youth / PPYFF with Liger

Goals
• The goal for this event is to bring together the brightest minds in our community and give them a platform to speak on a vast array of subjects.
• To develop important life skills such as leadership, organisation and communication.

TEDxISPP is an independently organised TED event (officially recognized by the TED organisation) which takes place annually at ISPP. It hopes to light the fire of learning and begin the conversations that matter. In this activity enables participants to learn the skills required to organise a large community event with efficiency.  This activity also focuses on the organisation of the Phnom Penh Youth Film Festival (PPYFF) that will take place in April 2018

CCF Dance

Goals
• Promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle through dance.

Every Friday afternoon during Global Citizenship.

Dancing is beneficial both physically and mentally. It’s a form of self expression. This is a perfect opportunity for dancers from different backgrounds and skills to work together to build confidence, as well as have fun together. Working together to learn all the challenging choreography will strengthen the bond between ISPP and CCF students.

CCF Arts and Crafts

Goals
• ISPP Students will be able to help Cambodian kids gain the opportunity to learn English in new and engaging ways.
• This activity aims to promote creativity and wellbeing through art.

ISPP students will play games and interact with CCF children and ultimately develop their artistic  and communication skills as well as creativity.

CCF English

Goals
• Promote English language skills and a love of language.
• To interact positively with those who are in need and are not always afforded the opportunity of a high level of education.

CCF English helps students to develop their communication and teaching skills through helping young Cambodian children to learn basic English. Some of these students have very little skills in English but are keen to learn.

Football with Green Umbrella

Goals
• Promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle through playing Football.

Every Friday afternoon during Global Citizenship.

In Football with Green Umbrella, ISPP students will develop playing and coaching skills that will be used with students from the Green Umbrella organisation (aged Grade 1 to 5). ISPP students will be teaching the basic and advanced techniques of football. This is best suited to those students who are passionate about football and want to teach students new tricks and skills.

STEM Club with Green Umbrella

Goals
• Promote STEM education with local students.
• To interact with those in need who do not get an opportunity to participate in STEM projects in their normal school curriculum.

STEM is a curriculum that involves science technology, engineering and mathematics. During Global Citizenship sessions, students in this activity collaborate with Green Umbrella and work with interesting short projects, that are linked to these four subjects. Some options include film, coding, robotics, photography and science experiments. This activity enhances learning and collaborating experiences.

English with Green Umbrella

Goals
• Learn about the needs of others and how we can develop training resources.

This activity is focused on connecting with students in Elementary school from the Green Umbrella organization. Through a mixture of games, direct instruction and other fun activities, Green Umbrella students will have the opportunity to engage with ISPP students to  improve their English language skills and grow confident in using the language conversationally.

School Resources with CTTP

Goals
• Learn about the needs of others and how we can develop training resources.

Four schools in the Takmao region rely on resources that are housed in the CTTP teacher training centre. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources to go around to all the classes, so a small group of Grade 8 ISPP students last year undertook an ambitious task to help create new sets of resources for teachers to use. In this activity, students will be working both at ISPP and the CTTP centre in Takmao.

Every Friday afternoon during Global Citizenship in Semester 2

Give them a ball and give them a chance. Cambodia’s youth make up more than a third of the population, and as such it is vital that they are prepared for the future. Rugby is a means to that end. Working with Kampuchea Balopp, this activity provides children with a chance to learn rugby skills and have fun.

Math with CTTP

Goals

ISPP students will help students from local schools in the Takmao region with Math classes. This activity requires students to have some knowledge of math and be confident helping others. CTTP students will learn Math through a variety of methods, including entertaining and engaging Math games.

English with CTTP

Goals
• Promote English language skills and a love of language.
• To interact positively with those who are in need and are not always afforded the opportunity of a high level of education.

Every Friday afternoon during Global Citizenship in Semester 2

English with CTTP enables participants to improve their communication and teaching skills by helping young Cambodian children learn basic English. Understanding of Khmer is not necessary, however students do need enthusiasm in order to create a fun learning environment. Students will be able to help underprivileged Cambodian kids with none or little English skills to gain the opportunity to learn English in new and engaging ways.

Art with Chak Angkre Krom school

Goals
• This activity aims to promote creativity and wellbeing through art.

In this activity we will work with students from Chak Angre Krom High School to help improve their artistic skills and creative thinking. This activity will helps improve communication and collaboration skills in planning engaging lessons for the students.

Goals

This activity will allow ISPP students to work with students from Chak Angkre Krom School. Students may need a good understanding of math as they will be working with middle school students. In this activity, ISPP students will need to brainstorm fun activities to engage the visiting students in a valuable learning experience.

English with Chak Angkre Krom school

This activity is for those who want to teach English but prefer to be working with middle school students rather than younger students.. The goal is to develop the English skills of the Chak Angkre Krom school students, using plenty of innovative methods such as games and songs.

Environmental Action Committee (EAC)

Goals
• Promoting best practice in the school with regards to energy and waste.
• Promoting Global Citizenship projects within the community.
• Working towards and Eco-Schools Green flag accredited status.

The Environmental Action Committee is made up of a group of students that will help to encourage and establish sustainable practices at ISPP, whilst hopefully evoking positive change for students and teachers both on and off-campus. Student discuss various ways in which ISPP can be improve or become more environmentally-minded with topics ranging from energy consumption to waste management. Students research, plan and implement viable ideas that come from these discussions.Those who are enthusiastic about making tangible changes to the ISPP campus and enjoy collaboration along the way may find that joining the EAC would be time well spent.

EAC Global Citizenship Group

Goals
• Develop results-driven sustainability projects at ISPP.

This is a sub section of the EAC. It is a group of students that will help to encourage and establish sustainable practices at ISPP, hopefully evoking positive change for students and teachers both on and off-campus.

Greening Up

Goals
• School beautification and bringing more natural elements to the indoors.

GREENING UP is all about making our school GREENER.  Students focus on increasing the number of plants in classrooms and common areas.  We purchase plants, pot them, grow them from cuttings and seeds whilst also maintaining some outdoor spaces.  GREENING UP continues to look for projects to make our school greener as we believe that plants promote learning by supplying oxygen and making learning environments more attractive and stress-free.

Project Change

Goals
• Students develop collaboration and leadership skills.
• Authentic engagement to make positive changes to the ISPP and local community.

Students in Grade 8 participate in the Project Change, a small group collaborative project that asks students to identify an issue in their community and propose effective solutions. Students are able to initiative a new project or take over the leading of an existing project. This activity introduces students to long term service projects and asks them to consider the ethical implications of their actions and solutions.

Chibodia

Goals

A student-led project which focuses on developing relationships between ISPP students and Chibodia students.  Students engage in a variety of activities that promote team-building and literacy skills

CCF Saturday Teaching

Goals
• Supporting CCF teachers and students to develop as learners.

3 month commitment – Periodic throughout the year

ISPP students can volunteer at a local school that is part of the Cambodian Children’s Fund network.  They must develop engaging lesson plans that support and enriches CCF students’ regular curriculum.  They can focus on math, language, art, or sport.

Big Brother, Big Sister

Goals
• Authentic engagement between communities.

Every second Friday throughout the year.

ISPP students serve as big brothers and sisters to young ISP students twice a month.  Together they engage in play-based learning and get to know one another.

Habitat for Humanity Young Leaders Build

Goals
• Addressing the challenges regarding safe and affordable housing.

ISPP students collaborate with students around Phnom Penh to help raise awareness of and improve living conditions in a local community.  They focus on building repairs, road repairs, hygiene education and community clean-ups.
